My not-so-secret affair with romance novels
Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies… That’s what Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past she wishes could just stay buried. Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.
Hopeless is one of those books that… whether it’s been days, weeks, or months since you’ve read it, the story will continue to blow your mind. It was all-consuming. Intense. Compelling. EPIC. And totally unlike anything I’ve ever read before.
To me, the mark of an outstanding novel lies in its ability to immerse readers in the characters’ reality. Hopeless is so exceptional, that I was “lost” from the beginning. The beautiful and heart-wrenching story had me in a vice grip; I was hooked and simply could not stop reading. From the first chapter to the last, I blocked out everything and everyone and dove wholeheartedly in the world of Holder & Sky.
I don’t want to spoil the story so I’ll just say that Hopeless is about the past, the present, and the love that develops between Holder and Sky. Just trust me when I say, you will be amazed by its originality, intensity, and utter perfection. Everything from the way Ms. Hoover segued between the past and present, to the dialogue and character development was flawless. You could tell that every word and punctuation mark had a purpose, because the writing flowed beautifully. As for the last chapter, it was probably one of the best endings I’ve ever read because I was left utterly content. There was no unfinished business or lingering questions – simply the best possible happily ever after for Sky & Holder.
This was my first encounter with Colleen Hoover’s work; but if the rest of her novels are as masterfully written as Hopeless was, I’ll be set for the year. I honestly can’t imagine reading anything else that can, or will, compare. Everyone should, without a doubt, purchase this book. I guarantee that it will be one of the best stories you’ve ever read!
