My not-so-secret affair with romance novels
What happens when you literally get a second chance at love? Evelyn Beaumont can’t remember anything from the time she was 14 until she was 19. She lost five years of her life because of brain cancer. Now she is a 20 year old survivor and enrolled in college, determined to reclaim her life. There she meets Tristan Monroe, but it isn’t the first time they’ve met. In fact, Tristan and Evelyn were once in love. It was a love so strong that it shattered him when, after the three years they had spent together, she never came back to Laguna. Evelyn wants nothing more than to have her memories back. With the help of Tristan and his brother Drake, they take Evelyn on an emotional journey filled with videos, photos, and memorabilia…a walk down memory lane. While they stroll down memory lane, Evelyn must learn to deal with Tristan’s rock star fame and the ever-present groupies. She struggles to find herself and to learn to love again. Is their love strong enough to overcome the memory loss? Is it strong enough to survive whatever comes their way? Will all the proof Tristan shares with her be enough to show her how deeply they loved each other? Will love find Evelyn once again?
If you ever need a prime example of the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, Talania is it. I saw a couple sitting on the beach and thought I’d be getting a fun, light story… Then I read the prologue, and all my preconceptions went right out the window.
I’ve come across many books that are also well-written with unique plots, but I’m so incredibly grateful I got to read this one. Talania: A Trip Down Memory Lane tugged at all my emotions and truly touched me. It’s a heartwarming story about two people – soulmates – who lost their first and only loves, and then struggled to find their way back to one another. I don’t want to spoil anything, but if you’re looking for an intense, amazing read with characters you want to be friends with, and a great story about enduring love, then you seriously need to check out Talania.
Evelyn Beaumont is so incredibly strong. In spite of everything that’s been thrown at her, she’s determined to live life to the fullest. At such a young age, she’s had to overcome so many obstacles that you can’t help but admire Evelyn’s fighting spirit and cheer her on every time she perseveres. As for Tristan… can he please be real? He’s brave, caring, and whenever he would sing a lullaby… I wish that I was the one that he hit with a volleyball. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about their journey, because with them, you really come to believe that true love can stand the test of time and distance.
Talania offers both Tristan and Evelyn’s POVs and while it switches from past to present (this is about a trip down memory lane, after all!), it wasn’t even remotely confusing. Days after finishing it, I am still completely blown away by the sheer brilliance that was packed into the pages of this novel. From the beautiful writing, to the character development, I loved it ALL – every single aspect!
This was my first time reading Crystal Spears’ work and it certainly won’t be the last. Talania is, hands down, one of my top picks for this year and I really hope there’s a spinoff because I don’t want to let go of these characters! I would love to know what happened between Shawn & Adella and see if Drake gets his own happily ever after… but even if there are no companion novels, Ms. Spears has made a fan out of me!
Crystal currently resides in Indiana with her two children and husband of 12 years. She loves the outdoors, photography, reading and writing. When she is not spending time with her family you can find her in the cave writing, social networking and beta reading for some top-notch authors.
