My not-so-secret affair with romance novels
Samuel Davenport runs his family’s New York based advertising agency. His brother, Adam, runs from responsibility and anything remotely boring. And his temp, Haley, runs so she’ll never be caught and hurt again. She moved to the city New Year’s Day to hide and recover, to build a new life far from her past. In an effort to lie low, Haley never expects to be more than a temp. What begins for Sam as an excuse to get to know her better, ends up being an opportunity for advancement and excitement for Haley. When Sam tries to uncover all of Haley’s mysteries, he exposes her hiding place, endangers her life, and threatens to destroy any chance of them ever having a future together.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Sure! I was imported from Florida, which sounds so much more exotic than saying I was adopted. I grew up in the Adirondacks. Now I lived in Charlotte, NC for twelve years and I’m itching for a change. We’re working on moving further south with our daughter.
Do you have a day job as well?
Not any more. My husband had me retire from corporate America June 15, 2011. I have an anniversary coming up. Our plan was to build his home remodeling business and allow me time to become a writer. Ta da!
When did you first start writing HIDING OUT and when did you finish your first book?
My first book was First A Dream, based on my master’s thesis. My second book was Worth the Wait. I wrote some fiction in there, a memoir about our daughter Kenna called Keeping Up With Kenna has been really popular. She’s the fourth smallest surviving preemie ever…born at 9.6 ounces. That books was a good seven months in the making a record from before she was born, recounting her 183 day NICU stay, and ending the day we came home. For the most part, when I sit down and decide to write a novel, it can be done in a month, as long as I push.
Where do you get your ideas for your books?
Well, that varies. I play the what if game sometimes and ask myself a series of questions. That’s how Hiding Out came to be. The sequel, Finally Found, coming out in a few days, that was born of a reviewer telling me she didn’t like the way Hiding Out ended and she felt there should be more. So, I pulled that out of nowhere and concocted a story to save my reviews and sell more books. Pretty terrible, right?
Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
The hero of our story is Adam Davenport, Sam’s younger brother. Everyone loved him from Hiding Out and wanted more. So, I gave him his own book. You can’t get more than that. Adam has been something of a playboy, pretty fun loving and irresponsible. He is a trust fund baby and realizes at the age of thirty that he’s never built any meaningful relationships. He meets Cammie and decides to strike up a mutually beneficial relationship when Sam hijacks his wallet, keys, and phone in an effort to trap him at home with a nurse. In the end, he gets more than he bargained for in the best way imaginable.
Nicki has lived in Charlotte, North Carolina with her children for the past eleven years and her husband for the past two and a half. Her journey has barely begun and she’s loving every minute of it. Every day of her life seems to bring new adventures, some bigger, better, shinier and prettier than others. She’s still getting used to that new life smell she’s experiencing, a combination of hope, love, and happiness. (The perfect scents to build a new life on…) For fun, she spends time with those she cares about, cooks, reads, writes, and especially lives to travel. The current travel goal: visit every Margaritaville. Two down! (Eleven to go?) In addition to writing on Suddenly Single Journey, Nicki blogs at What Dreamers Do. Her writing can also be found on Shine, where she is a Shine Parenting Guru and an award winning Yahoo! Contributor on YourWisdom as the relationship and dating expert.
